Flagging the above audio, where I go through the specifics of the guide, and give additional direction and guidance to how to decrease moments of distress and disconnection and maximize opportunities for joy.
Positive visualization: Before you commit to any plans, visualize time spent with your family feeling positive and joyful. Where are you? What are you doing?
Create non-negotiable self-care routines: What daily habits help you feel grounded and ready to take on the day? Implement these routines during your extended family time.
Quality over quantity: 3 hours of connected, positive time with your family is healthier than 2 full days spent snapping at one other. Plan your time together intentionally.
Be the expert on your nuclear family’s needs: Vocalize and prioritize the routines crucial to your family functioning, such as bedtime, wind-down rituals, and timing of meals.
Hold your boundaries: A family member’s reaction to your boundary setting doesn’t mean you need to change it. Validate the feeling without sacrificing your boundaries.
Notice joy: Be on the lookout for moments of joy. When you notice these moments, lean into it. After all, this is what it’s all about!
